Hi, I'm Sylvia.

Where I Come From

I'm a proud product of California public schools, from Sumac Elementary to UC Berkeley where I graduated with a degree in Communications. I'm the child of immigrants - when my parents came to this country, they were alone.  Thankfully, they found a community and that community helped them raise me and my brother.  My family instilled in me a commitment to faith, service, and education.  These values shaped my own choices as I found opportunities to serve my own community.  For over 25 years, I have been focused on serving students.  In my professional life, I specialized in student recruitment and meeting student needs. In my spare time, I've been a youth group counselor, a children's ministry volunteer, a mentor, and a high school parent advisor. These opportunities have been among the great joys of my life, and am excited to keep serving my community in my current role as Cupertino School board member.

My husband and I are the proud parents of two children who attended CUSD and FUHSD schools.  At each of the schools our kids have attended, I have been an active parent volunteer, investing not just in my own kids' education but taking on roles that impacted the larger school community.  I truly believe that when families and schools work together, students are more successful and the entire community benefits.

School Involvement

My heart is to serve my community, because I know the importance of parent partnership and I've had the opportunity to be active in elementary, middle and high school, wherever my kids happened to be enrolled. I've served in over a dozen volunteer roles from CLIPCO president, graduation chair, Walking School Bus, athletic team parent, musical production parent, curriculum advisory committee and after-school program coordinator and more. In these roles, I've been able to advocate for ALL students, which is at the heart of what a school board member does.

State-wide Education Leadership

It's been a privilege to serve in two different state-wide organizations.  I was elected by my peers to serve on the Board of Directors for the California School Boards Association, an advocacy organization for public education in California.  As one of the Directors, I help shape direction for the organization, and push for statewide legislation that helps all kids in California.Prior that that, I served on the board of the API School Board Members Association, providing training and networking for school board members. I bring my state-level knowledge and experience to our CUSD, benefiting our students and staff.
