Editorial: Leong for CUSD Board

Updated: Sep 28

The Cupertino Union School District, which serves south Los Altos students at Montclaire elementary and Cupertino middle schools, is primed for a turnaround after years of declining enrollment that led to the closure of two schools last year.

The district will likely cross the financial threshold (for good) into basic aid funding status, which means drawing from some of the high property taxes in the district’s boundaries.

The district suffered a public relations black eye with the school closures, but board members held steady in a decision that was ultimately the right thing to do. Incumbent board member Sylvia Leong noted how students from one closed school merged with another nearby and were happier in the larger school setting.

Leong is a soft-spoken but true leader, someone who makes the right decisions, not the most popular ones. She is needed for another term as the district makes the important transition to basic aid.
